We are improving our skills constantly on the subway, changing lines to get to where we are going. I think we took 4 different trains today.
Today we went to several area of the Berlin Wall. We saw some of the original wall and area where they recreated what it looked like at the time. So disturbing. (The graffiti all over Germany is terrible. They graffiti everything everywhere.
The below photo showed the no mans land between the walls. They were filled with sensors and light to catch anyone trying to escape.
This photo shows where there was a below ground escape tunnel.
They built 3 walls, improving the security each time.this was one of the original walls.
We then headed to the East side where they have kept a km or so of the wall for artists to share their work.
Sadly so much of it was graffitied we only walked a short way. So sad as it could have been quite a work of art.
Checkpoint Charlie below...thought it would have been a bit more impressive.
We then walked to the Holocaust Memorial that was Berlin's tribute to the victims who lost their lives. There were 2711 tombstone like slabs of equal size but varying heights placed on uneven ground (to convey a sense of claustrophobia and disorientation) the size of a soccer field. It was very confronting as was the whole day today.

We are so lucky living in Australia! So free to do what we want. I wonder what we would have done if someone tried to put a wall up keeping people in a certain area.
